When talking about hockey the most important part that is needed to maintain is safety. Hockey can be a devastating game is not played carefully. Be it a field hockey or ice hockey safety tends to come first. The most danger faced when playing the game is by the goal keeper. He is the only one that stands between the player and the goal. The main concern is the ball or the puck which ever it may be, they are both made from hard material and is hit by player with great power and force.

If either the ball or the puck hits a player, it is able to cause a great deal of damage. So safety for the goal keeper is a must. Goalie mask is a must for the face is at most risk and very fragile. The goalie cage is what stands between the puck and the goal keeper's face. The cage can either be a normal one or a cat eye. It depends solely on what the goal keeper is comfortable to play wearing.

The angles wires in the cat eye are far more preferred due to its design, which allows a player to see clearly every thing in front of him. The cage is made of strong steel frame. If they are not maintained or made carefully a strong hit can easily dent the goalie cage and cause a severe damage to the goalkeeper's face. A good quality mask with a strong cage won't cost much. But it is always to look for safety first and then the price. For no price is greater than the price of your life.

Another type of goalie cage that was available was the cage/helmet combo mask.  If you are familiar with ice hockey, you would see the same mask was used by Dominik Hasek who planned his retirement on the year 2008.

The goalie cage is best if it is subjected to test before taking out on the field. The first cage form was used by the player Clint Benedict. He wore the mask for his safety and to save a broken nose of his which happened way back in the 1920. So before you go off for a helmet make sure you have the right knowledge and the right gear before you set foot on the field. Hope for the best that no harm will be done, if measures are taken before hand.
